First appearance of Niska, first mention of the Independents, the Browncoats and the ‘Hands of Blue’, first use of Book’s opening narration. First episode co-written by Tim Minear. Also on initial broadcast, this was the first episode shown so it was also the original audience introductions to Mal, Zoe, Jayne, Wash, Kaylee, Inara, Simon, River, Book and Serenity.

The Ship
Serenity is a mid-bulk transport (class code 03-K64) with a standard radian-accelerator core and no weapons. Kaylee was forced to rewire the grav thrust because Mal refuses to replace the compression coil.

The Crew:
Mal
He fought in the war as an Independent. Mal always finds an Alliance friendly bar on U-day to brawl in. His reputation is that he gets the job done and that he’s not pro-Alliance. During the train heist, it is his job to board the train with Zoe and locate the cargo, when it goes wrong he and Zoe are stuck on the train. He uses the alias Mr Raymond and then plays along with Inara’s story…
